Leadership

Here in Omaha like other communities across the nation, many teenagers face significant academic, social, and emotional challenges. For these young people, traditional education and family support structures often fail to address the root causes of their struggles. *Metro Area Youth Services* (MAYS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping at-risk youth, is working to change this trajectory by focusing on both academic success and the development of crucial leadership skills. Through mentorship, personalized support, and a unique leadership training program, MAYS empowers both its staff and students to grow into resilient, capable individuals who can overcome obstacles and inspire positive change in their communities.

At the heart of MAYS’ mission is the belief that leadership is a skill that can be cultivated through experience, mentorship, and self-reflection. The organization works with troubled teens—many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds, face family instability, or have had involvement with the justice system—providing them with the tools they need to succeed both academically and socially. A key aspect of MAYS’ approach is its focus on building leadership within the administration. The staff, many of whom share similar experiences with the teens they mentor, undergo an intensive leadership development program designed to equip them with the skills needed to effectively guide and support the youth they serve.

This commitment to leadership is not only a professional development opportunity for the staff but also a critical part of the organization’s culture. Staff members are trained to model leadership behaviors through problem-solving, conflict resolution, and empathetic communication. By observing how adults in leadership roles handle challenges, students are encouraged to adopt similar approaches in their own lives. The result is a supportive, growth-oriented environment where students learn how to lead with integrity, resilience, and accountability. Teens at MAYS are not only guided by mentors but also by an entire organizational culture that values leadership at every level.

Alongside leadership training, MAYS places a strong emphasis on academic success. The organization provides tutoring, counseling, and enrichment programs tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, MAYS takes the time to understand each teen’s individual challenges and strengths. This personalized academic support helps students catch up on missed coursework, strengthen their academic skills, and develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments. In addition to improving their grades, students also learn essential skills like goal-setting, time management, and self-discipline—traits that are vital for both academic achievement and leadership development.

Ultimately, the combination of leadership training and academic support helps underprivileged and troubled teens rise above their circumstances and become not just better students, but better leaders. By instilling a sense of purpose and responsibility, MAYS is giving young people the confidence to envision a future where they are not defined by their past struggles, but by their capacity to lead and make a positive impact. Through its holistic approach, *Metro Area Youth Services* is proving that with the right guidance, mentorship, and opportunities, even the most vulnerable teens can transform their lives and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Tiffany Duncan

COO/Co-Founder

Tiffany Duncan is a dedicated youth development professional with nearly two decades of experience. Growing up in a small, rural town, she developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the power of community. After graduating from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln with a B.S. in Secondary Education, she knew she wanted to make an impact on the lives of those around her, helping them to reach their full potential. However, she wasn’t quite sure what that path would look like.

Tiffany spent several years in different cities and jobs, looking for the right fit. Whether it was running youth programs, working for the Boys and Girls Club, facilitating corporate teambuilding retreats, working as a barista, or substitute teaching, she didn’t find her place right away, but she did develop the skills and mindset that would prove essential to her role at MAYS.  She learned how crucial self-sufficiency is to personal growth, developed strong advocacy skills, and learned to empower others. She was able to build relationships with many people who look, think, and experience life in completely different ways. All of this created a unique perspective that Tiffany has brought to her work at MAYS – being able to merge two vastly different worlds and allowing our youth access to new ideas and people as well.

Tiffany’s diverse background has equipped her with a unique perspective that has been instrumental in the growth and success of the MAYS Foundation. As Chief Operating Officer, she plays a pivotal role in overseeing operations, fostering a positive culture, and empowering young people to reach their full potential. Tiffany’s expertise spans program development, administration, grant writing, and many other areas. She is passionate about creating opportunities for youth to develop essential life skills, pursue their dreams, and make a meaningful impact on their communities.

Tiffany considers the MAYS Foundation one of her greatest legacies and is immensely proud of the young people who are part of the MAYS gang. She believes the best is yet to come for MAYS and is excited to be a part of its enduring impact.
